As we stepped out of the 1hr 30min trip bus, all five of our senses were immediately overwhelmed with everything the festival had to offer – the scent and taste of delicious foods, drinks and snacks from every corner of the world, bright, colourful and gorgeous clothes and performances from dancers and musicians to satisfy our eyes and ears. A multitude of stalls were spread all over Pakington Street, with very friendly stallholders ready and waiting for anyone to come up to try their hands at various activities offered by many nations living in Australia.
It was wonderful to meet familiar and new faces at Pako Fest, we felt a huge sense of unity and happiness as we strolled around, taking in everything that can be seen and heard. It was a big opportunity for many kids to represent their cultures, to take a stand at the stage in front of the Town Hall and show everyone that they are truly proud of the community that they belong to! Plenty of adults also showed us praiseworthy, unique performances and allowed us a glimpse into their beautiful cultures.
As we hopped onto the stage, sun shining, the eyes of the spectators eagerly watching us, we knew immediately that our hard work training has paid off, big time. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that despite the ongoing conflicts in our home country and its neighbours, the people saw us for who we really are – simple folk dancers trying to spread happiness. Mission accomplished – people poured words of encouragement and praise upon us after we finished, which is always heartwarming.
